Old Humarock Post Card Presentation
Part 9

41. Approaching Fourth Cliff C. 1935
These five cards focus on Fourth Cliff. If you live(d) there or have interesting information, please contact me.  (just click on Bob Brian)
Look at how there were no houses along Central Ave. at this point, around 1935. One can see at least three houses on the Cliff. Since this card is pre-WWII, the lookout tower had not arrived yet either. Does the Cliff look higher than it is now?

42. On Fourth Cliff C. 1938
It appears that people drove here to use the beach and to camp out. Those objects that are not cars or houses, are tents. On the back of this card in 1938 Madge wrote "Can you see our tent…All this place lacks is 'year round hot water!" The furthermost portion of the Cliff certainly looks more prominent than it looks now.

43. Along Central Ave. C. 1940's
Fourth Cliff is to the left, and there are more houses all along here now. The first house to the right looks the same today, November 2000. I have heard that some of these houses were moved to these sights by the military during WWII from the spit of land to the left (west) of the Cliff. Note that this area was named Silver Sands, Humarock Beach, Mass.

44. Looking Down From Fourth Cliff C. 1944
This is how Fourth Cliff was first developed. These cottages portray the simplicity of life in Humarock in the 1940's, white picket fence and all! On August 26, 1944, Olive wrote, "Am I getting a sunburn. Oh boy. I'll say."
Is the dark building way down on the right the duck hunting club whose foundation is still there?

45. Similar Silver Sands View C. Later 1940's
A few more cottages have arrived on the Cliff by the late 1940's.

Responses from viewers:

Thank you for your many replies to my questions, I appreciate your interest.

I received both yes and no responses as to whether Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe visited Humarock. Apparently his Red Sox brother Dom DiMaggio married a woman whose parents owned one of the twin houses, and people hoped Joe would visit also. Did he? Are we confusing Joe and Dom? I suppose Dom would know the answer. Is any one in contact with him or his wife? The debate goes on. I read in a local paper recently that there is a picture of Joe and Marilyn at the Guernet Restaurant in Green Harbor. That's pretty close! Let me know if you have an opinion or information.

I also received responses that the spa next to the Atlantic Market, on the corner of Central Ave. and Humarock Ave. was named Jack's Spa. And that the market was the Atlantic Market, not the A & P. The esteemed senior bundle boy there in the 1950's responded saying, "The wage scale then was in the 35 cent an hour range, and we were damned glad to get it." And the spa across the street where the antique store is now was called the Surf! Thank you and please keep in touch with other information or pictures.
