Old Humarock Post Card Presentation
Part 6

By Bob Brian

26. The Old Bridge and Boats  C. 1920
This is a classic picture of the old Humarock Bridge and some classic old boats.  Note that the bridge was low to the water; I’m not sure if it was a drawbridge or not.

27. River Scene  C. 1919
There was not much building on the river then.  I believe the first house is now the Nautical Mile Restaurant.  The house further down is my current house at Concord St.

28. The Sea Wall C. 1923
This is my oldest post card showing the sea wall, it is dated August 17, 1923.  So, the wall must have been built about then.  One card writer says how easier it is to open up their house for the summer now that the wall is in place because you do not have to deal with the residue from having the ocean flowing under the house all winter.

Notice that the second house has changed since Card #17(third house on card #17).  One of our readers wrote that the other twin house was moved back from the wall. And that it still stands majestically on Webster Street. That is fascinating.

29. The Wall at the North End C. 1923
Remember Card # 18?  Well, here are the same houses at the northern end, but with a sea wall in front  in 1923.  Some of the wooden pilings from the other picture are still in front of the wall.

30. Wall With Buttresses Showing  C. 1926
How long has it been since we have seen these buttresses?  If a big storm would wash out the sand and stones, which nearly reach the top of the wall currently, the buttresses would be visible again.  As seen here, they are great for sitting and picnicking.  Walking the wall also becomes more precarious, especially if you have a touch of vertigo!  Yes, Virginia, there is sand under there!
