Old Humarock Post Card Presentation
Part 12

56. View From River C. 1940
This card is entitled, Southern End of Humarock Beach, Mass. Sixty years later it is difficult to recognize the scene, but I think the brown house on the right of the card is at the foot of Hawthorne Street, and is now gray. Some of the rooftops shown are actually on houses up at the beach, and most of the side streets had not been built up yet.

57. Royal Brown's Home and Studio C. 1940
Here's a trivia question. Who was Royal Brown and which street did he name in Humarock?
Answer: He was a Humarock writer for the Saturday Evening Post, and thus named his street Post Script Lane!
His home was on the river where two new homes have been built in recent years. His neighbors tell me that every time he made some big money from his writings he would add another room on to his house.

58. Generic Post Card C. 1948
Remember these cards? Another would be a moon behind a cloud with a silver lining over the ocean. They were popular then and any beach name could be printed on them. The lady who sent this one in July of 1948 wrote "This is where I spent the first week of my vacation, but I did not go in that water!" The water must have been as cold then as it is now!

59. View Looking North Up the River C. Mid 1950's
All those beautiful wooden boats tell me that this was the 1950's. Now in this picture many of the rooflines have not changed over 50 years and many buildings are still recognizable. I think that is the "new" bridge, so this view is after 1952.

60. Center of Humarock C. 1957
I purchased this card myself as a teenager in 1957 at Clarks Store, and it has miraculously survived until now. Note the fins on the 1950's cars, the Atlantic Market on the right, the white line down the middle of the road on which we walked from the beach to keep our feet from burning, and Clarks Store on the left. At one of my historical exhibits, a lady recognized the young ladies standing on the sidewalk, and their dog, and said they were residents of one of the houses to the left. She knew their names, and the name of the dog!
